EPIC BOOKS LIST SERIES

Any series would work as a good starting point and they do not need to be read in order. From there, the scope widens to cover a huge variety of characters over the entire length and breadth of both worlds. The earliest books focus on the life and training of young Pug as a Magician. Some of the earliest, such as Magician, might be a little hard to get a hold of now, but the most recent books were published as late as 2013 so should be easier to find. This group of series, all set in the same worlds of Midkemia and Kelewan, currently contains 29 books.

That being said, it is uproariously funny, irreverent (which will appeal to teens) and clever. Discworld is a little different, not in scope (41 books published) but in the fact it is incredibly tongue in cheek and actively mocks a lot of standard fantasy conventions.

I will say it is widely disputed where to start with Discworld and there are a million places you can – I was told The Color of Magic originally, but a friend swears by Thief of Time. Completed.ĭiscworld series by Terry Pratchett. Widely known as one of the best adaptations of the Arthurian legends ever. Great book that works well as a standalone, although Bradley later added more books around the legends. A great retelling of the Arthurian legends, staring Morgaine, or Morgan le Fay, and focusing on the females from the legends. Mists of Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

There are currently 15 books in the series (broken down into smaller sections), plus a novella and another book forthcoming. Great adventure with some very dark moments. Goodkind also does not pull punches, although his named character body count seems to remain low. One of Richard’s ‘guides’, a woman, is actually far more capable than him for most of the book. Again, we have our unsuspecting hero, Richard, who gets dragged into world changing events very quickly. Robert Jordan died before completing it, but left a lot of notes for Brandon Sanderson, who finished the series. It can get a little long winded (14 books plus a prequel, but finished!) but the action never ceases and the scope is as big as Game of Thrones. The series revolves around a group of friends who are thrust into trouble when their village is attacked. Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series is also a good Game of Thrones read-alike, although the early books predate it. Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (& Brandon Sanderson). Great magic system and awesome female character. However, he’s already published one standalone and then the first in a trilogy (next coming January 2016) staring characters a few generations later. This series starts with The Final Empire and is a completed trilogy, following the adventures of Kelsier, Vin and their friends. Very much inspired, especially his early stuff, by Tolkien.

EPIC BOOKS LIST FREE

Some of his earlier stuff might be a little hard to find, so feel free to start later. There are 33 books, broken down into smaller series, which can often be picked up at any point in time, with a 34th on the way. Starting with the Sword of Shannara, Terry Brooks’ history of Shannara stretches from a recent future of the Earth as well know it now to many years past the Apocalypse. And you know some of your favorites are safe due to the flashback nature of the books. Definitely a Game of Thrones read-alike with a smaller body count. Out so far: Books 1 & 2 and one companion. Each book in the trilogy is a day in ‘real time’. It’s told from Kvothe’s POV as he recounts the story over the course of three days.

The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss follows the adventures of Kvothe from a very young age through to adulthood. Reminder: these books are published for adult so often contain graphic violence, language and/or sexual encounters, but can also not contain any. Pictured below is the first book in each series. And many of them, while not staring women, do have strong female characters. Although YA has a great variety of YA (some of it very epic indeed) and, in general, a greater number of series/books staring female protagonists and by female authors, there is still much to pique the interest of Game of Thrones fans. Martin, adult epic fantasy is all the rage. So with the immense popularity of A Song of Ice & Fire aka Game of Thrones by George R.R.
